Includes additional activities associated with phonics, phonemic awareness, reading fluency, vocabulary/grammar, and comprehension.
Troubleshooting and Intervention outline utilizing the complete set of books, from phonics to comprehension.
This book was designed for parents who desire to prepare their children for Pre-K through 1st grade, or if you find that your older children are still struggling with understanding phonics in terms of differences between upper and lowercase letters, consonants and vowels, and how to write uppercase and lowercase letters. Check with your child’s teacher to determine if your child is struggling in any of these areas.
Parents will be able to help children avoid one of the key reading deficits, inability to decode. Children with such reading deficits are unable to decipher unfamiliar words, because they need to understand how letter sounds form words, and how the ability to segment and blend word parts play a vital role in reading fluency and comprehension. Blending and Segmenting Parent’ Guide shows parents how to address this deficit, and provides strategies on building blending and segmenting skills. Blending and Segmenting Parent Guide helps parents develop proficient readers who understand how to decode and segment word parts.
Comprehension is largely dependent on readers’ ability to understand how groups of words convey meaning. This can be achieved through knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Children must be able to define, apply, and analyze parts of speech based on their awareness of grammatical elements such as nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, subject-verb agreements, and types of sentences. Children need to understand that words can have multiple meanings depending on the context in which words are used, and that awareness of prefix, suffix, homophones, homographs, similes, and metaphors will enhance their ability to apply and analyze the spoken and written forms of words.
Comprehension Intervention was designed to help parents address the deficits associated with lack of comprehension skills. It begins with increasing parents’ awareness of the various reading genres, and then showing parents how to use comprehension strategies to help children understand literary elements and text structures. One of the key comprehension strategies is questioning; therefore, Comprehension Intervention guides parents in effective questioning of fiction and nonfiction texts, in order to inspire a deeper understanding of the various texts children read. Parents will be amazed at how much they will be able to help their children conduct close reading, and ultimately increase their comprehension skills simply by following the steps outlined in Comprehension Intervention.
