Schools and parents are the two main stakeholders responsible for student achievement, however, there is a gap in the partnership. While both groups are tasked with collaboratively tackling achievement deficits, only one group has the ability, training, resources, and understanding of the strategies needed to do so. Parents as Tutors partners with schools to help build parent capacity to join them in this important mission of supporting student achievement. We build parents’ capacity to understand the curriculum and collaboratively address reading deficits.
Our reading intervention program is designed with parental academic engagement in mind. Parent as Tutors’ resources give parents the step-by-step approach needed to partner with schools in correcting or proactively avoiding reading deficits. These resources are aligned to reading standards and reading strategies that teachers use, so parents are better equipped to collaborate with teachers as they boost student achievement in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, grammar, and comprehension.
Our resources provide strategies related to phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. They are available in both English and Spanish to help parents of English language learners. In addition, our resources align with existing reading curriculums and in some cases are used in turnkey intervention programs. Visit our Resources page for more detailed information.

There are two approaches: Comprehensive/Proactive and Targeted/Reactive. In most schools, the comprehensive and proactive approach is taken at the K-2 level, while the targeted approach is done more so at grades 3-6.
Comprehensive/Proactive Approach
Each family receives a kit of relevant resources, and throughout the school year, weekly aligned assignments are provided by grade-level teachers. Parents utilize the resources to work with their children, and also use these resources in parent workshop sessions.
Targeted/Reactive Approach
The school conducts a data analysis to identify struggling readers. An action plan to address gaps and opportunities is then developed. Families of these struggling readers receive resources and training in ways of supporting their children. Parents become a part of the reading intervention team and work collaboratively with teachers to make it happen.
Yes, we do. Our parent engagement toolkit utilizes a multi-tiered approach to identifying parental capacity needs for targeted support and is also designed to strengthen their ability to partner with schools as they collaboratively raise student achievement. Schools that use our resources benefit greatly from our parental engagement planning support.
