Schools and parents are the two main stakeholders responsible for student achievement, however, there is a gap in the partnership. While both groups are tasked with collaboratively tackling achievement deficits, only one group has the ability, training, resources, and understanding of the strategies needed to do so. Parents as Tutors partners with schools to help build parent capacity to join them in this important mission of supporting student achievement. We build parents’ capacity to understand the curriculum and collaboratively address reading deficits.
Our reading intervention program is designed with parental academic engagement in mind. Parent as Tutors’ resources give parents the step-by-step approach needed to partner with schools in correcting or proactively avoiding reading deficits. These resources are aligned to reading standards and reading strategies that teachers use, so parents are better equipped to collaborate with teachers as they boost student achievement in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, grammar, and comprehension.
Our resources provide strategies related to phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. They are available in both English and Spanish to help parents of English language learners. In addition, our resources align with existing reading curriculums and in some cases are used in turnkey intervention programs. Our program and resources are used in multiple ways, namely for TIERs II and III reading intervention that is inclusive of parental academic engagement. It is also used in driving homework support for parents of struggling readers, afterschool extended-learning reading intervention, summer learning engagement, building parents’ capacity for academic engagement as they partner with teachers to address reading deficits, providing academic support for parents who are experiencing homelessness, and as a supplement to the curriculum as schools increase parental academic engagement.
Yes, we do. Our parent engagement toolkit utilizes a multi-tiered approach to identifying parental capacity needs for targeted support and is also designed to strengthen their ability to partner with schools as they collaboratively raise student achievement. Schools that use our resources benefit greatly from our parental engagement planning support.
Glad you asked! One of the books in the reading resource kit, Turnkey Guidebook, highlights focus areas related to phonemic awareness, phonics, grammar, comprehension, and fluency concerns. Once parents and teachers identify students’ area(s) of reading deficit, the turnkey guide directs outlines what needs to be done in terms of strategies, and then points to books in the kits and page numbers in the accompanying resources that outline the strategies they should use to correct the deficit. The Complementary Resource book is chock full of activities to which parents are directed, to provide additional practice activities.
Definitely! It is important to note that we encourage parental academic engagement in all schools’ reading intervention programs. In the Turnkey Guidebook, there is a lesson unit planning template that teachers and parents can use to collaboratively design lessons targeted to addressing students’ reading deficit focus areas. Teachers enjoy using it as they plan parental academic engagement activities for addressing reading deficits. Parents appreciate the feeling of empowerment gained when they are able to understand and use the skills in partnership, to raise student achievement.
