Shirley was really thirsty.
Shirley: Can I have some milk, mom?
Mom: I don’t know, Shirley. Can you?
When Shirley used the word can, she did not realize that she was referring to her ability to drink milk.
Shirley: I’m sorry. May I have some milk?
Mom: Sure you may, honey.
Shirley finally realized that using the word may, signified asking for permission.
May represents permission while can represents capability. Which are you really asking?
